Residential architect in Christchurch — Arkhē Architecture, Canterbury studio

Arkhē in Ōtautahi Christchurch
Waitaha Canterbury · Te Waipounamu the South Island

Arkhē opened its Ōtautahi Christchurch studio in 2026, extending the practice to Waitaha Canterbury and the wider South Island. The studio operates from Level 2, 47 Salisbury Street, alongside the original Tauranga studio — one practice, working across both islands.

Canterbury presents a distinct set of conditions: braided rivers and open plains, the Port Hills and Banks Peninsula, the high country rising to the Main Divide. The nor'wester, the alpine frost and the long horizontal of the plains each place their own demands on a house. Design here begins with those conditions — site, climate and orientation — before any line is drawn.

The practice brings a decade of houses shaped by strong ground: coastal dunes in the Bay of Plenty, regenerating bush in the Kaimai foothills, and the volcanic plateau at National Park, where Ruapehu Hut was designed for snow loading, extreme weather and a pragmatic brief — shelter, the essentials, and maximum engagement with the mountain. Canterbury concentrates these same conditions — coastal, rural and alpine — within a single region.

The work is honest, restrained and enduring — architecture grounded in its context and shaped around the people who live there. From new homes to renovations and interiors, the studio works with clients of all budgets, from first sketch through to construction observation — across Christchurch, Canterbury, the Mackenzie and the Southern Lakes.

Every project starts with a conversation — about the site, the brief and what is essential.
